Bringing back the dynamics step by step
After the work, we let nature take its course again.
After the work, we let nature take its course again.
In 2017 and 2018, the Boschplaat Vision was drawn up together with islanders. The province of Friesland, the municipality of Terschelling, Staatsbosbeheer, Rijkswaterstaat and the Wadden Academy are now working together to implement that vision. While we work in the area, it remains accessible to islanders and other visitors. So that everyone can continue to enjoy the Bosch plate. And after work? Then we let nature take its course again.
When the Koggediep becomes silted, the Boschplaat becomes one with the island. Over time, separate dune areas, the various “dunes”, are created on the large sandbar. From the beginning of the 20e century, birdwatchers have been monitoring the protection of the breeding bird colonies.

In the 1970s, biodiversity on the Boschplaat was at its peak. Moreover, the Bosch plate was larger than ever. The area was rated as particularly valuable for the Wadden region and a leader for nature on the Wadden Sea.
Due to coastal erosion, the area is actually starting to shrink. The diversity in the area is also changing; grasses and reeds are slowly gaining the upper hand. This has negative consequences for the breeding birds.
The solutions in the Boschplaat vision are translated into practical solutions and plans. Various parties are participating in this, led by the province of Fryslân. Together, they are developing plans for grazing the salt marsh, stopping coastal erosion and increasing and reducing the natural dynamics in the Stuifdijk.
The program team will start developing the recovery measures in the Boschplaat vision. The sounding board group, which was involved in drawing up the vision, is also coming together again.
After intensive preparation, we will start working on the Bosch plate. We build sand dunes and wash-overs and spray sand off the coast. This is how we give the Bosch plate back its dynamism and future. By building carves (drift dunes) and wash-overs, sand from the beach can further raise the salt marsh and let it grow with sea level rise
