Province Friesland

Protect and strengthen

The Province of Friesland is one of the and partners in the implementation program of the Boschplaat. The province initiated the Boschplaat vision in 2017 and 2018.

Nature is the basis of our existence. But that nature is also under pressure. We ask a lot of our nature and at the same time we have to deal with climate change and a reduction in biodiversity. That is why it is important to take good care of nature.

Municipality of Terschelling

For the sake of the island

The Municipality of Terschelling is one of the clients in the Boschplaat implementation program.

Joost Hellevoort is closely involved on behalf of the municipality of Terschelling and is part of the program team: “Our focus at the Boschplaat is on preserving the existing use, the cultural-historical values and the experience, because without experience, there is no support for nature restoration.”

Terschelling Forestry Administration

Site owner and nature manager

Staatsbosbeheer is the owner and nature manager of the Boschplaat. Commissioned by the province of Friesland, Staatsbosbeheer, together with islanders, drew up the Boschplaat vision in 2018. This is the basis for the nature restoration measures in this project.

Joeri Lamers, forest ranger for communication and public: “I've been involved in this entire program from the start. In addition to connecting content from Staatsbosbeheer, I am often the one who takes groups to the Boschplaat. For example, I have already brought several groups of islanders to show what we are going to do. On Sunday afternoons, you can also meet me on the Boschplaat: I'm happy to search for old finds. '

Rijkswaterstaat

Manager of the sandy coast

Rijkswaterstaat manages the sandy coast of Terschelling and the major waters of the North Sea and Wadden Sea. Rijkswaterstaat is responsible, among other things, for implementing coastal management, managing the dune water barrier and various responsibilities for water and nature quality. The focus is on managing the coastline and the goals for Natura 2000 and the Water Framework Directive and, in a broader sense, maintaining and restoring natural dynamic processes in the Wadden Sea region.

Robert Zijlstra, advisor on water safety, morphology and climate adaptation: “I myself mainly have knowledge of the coast and coastal management, but I also contribute ideas about the program and implementation. And where necessary, I involve colleagues who know more about water and nature quality. I have been contributing to the Boschplaat vision from the start and am on the program team on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat. '

Wadden Academy

Space for natural processes

Piet Hoekstra is professor and researcher at the Wadden Academy in Leeuwarden and, in this role, joins the implementation program. He is a member of the Boschplaat program team and is therefore an important link between the implementation program and science.

Since 2004, he has been involved in research into the formation of washovers. In cooperation with nature organizations, he strives for more dynamism and biodiversity on the Wadden Islands by giving natural processes space. Sand transport by water and wind plays a central role in this.
